Everyone loves Tacos! Below is a healthy twist on an old favorite using Sprouted Grain Tortillas…why Sprouted?? Glad you asked!
Why? Because the only way to unlock the vital benefits we expect from grains is to sprout them first. Here are some benefits you’ll get from sprouted grains:
- Increased Digestibility– Sprouting breaks down starches in grains into simple sugars so your body can digest them easily.
- Increased Absorption of Minerals– Sprouting breaks down enzyme inhibitors, so your body can more easily adsorb calcium, magnesium, iron, copper and zinc.
- Increased Antioxidants– Sprouting releases more antioxidants that are naturally stored in the grains and seeds.
- Increased Vitamin C– Sprouting produces vitamin C.
- Increased Vitamin B– Sprouting increases the vitamin B2, B5 & B6
WHY I LIKE FOOD FOR LIFE PRODUCTS:
The company that bakes Food for Life products, such as the tortillas in this receipt, responsibly build their products with the following in mind:
- Only freshly sprouted certified organic grains are used.
- The products are kosher.
- No flour of any kind is used. Studies have shown that grinding grains into flour increases the surface area upon which enzymes in the body can work to quickly convert starch into glucose thus causing a spike blood sugar.
- No genetically modified organisms (GMO’s) are used.
- No refined sugars are used. When sugar is refined and processed there are many harmful ingredients that are added to the sugar as a result of processing. Instead, malted barley, a natural sweetener produced from sprouted barley is used. This form of sugar is considered a complex carbohydrates rather than the “sugar” (simple carbohydrate). The body needs to work harder to utilize a complex carbohydrate, thus blood sugar raises more slowly.
- No preservatives or shortenings are used.
- A slow-bake process is used to preserve the natural fiber and bran benefits of grains and to minimize glycation.
- 1 pack Ezekiel 4:9 Organic Sprouted Grain Tortillas
- 1 bag Trader Joe’s Organic Shredded Green & Red Cabbage with Orange Carrots
- Choice of organic protein (pork, chicken) or Wild Caught Mahi Mahi
- Pico De Gallo – make in advance (Need a Pico De Gallo recipe click here for a simple one you can make in just 10 minutes!)
Toast the tortillas lightly in oven or heat briefly in microwave. Cut into quarters. Place selected protein (potentially a great way to use up leftovers) and cabbage mix on the quartered tortillas. Top with homemade Pico de Gallo…hijole!
Note: Don’t forget to use any leftover tortillas to make a quick breakfast wrap…a better alternative than a fast food breakfast sandwich.
