Platelet-Rich Plasma, or PRP, and its potentially unlimited benefits in skin rejuvenation is a hot topic in the world of Medical Aesthetics today.
It is a commonly held myth, that PRP is a relatively new therapy, which can be attributed to the increased media buzz from the popularity in these treatments among the Hollywood jetsetters. However, the real story is that PRP Therapy has been used in sports and orthopedic medicine for many years, as well as in reconstructive surgery and even dentistry. In fact, the first centrifuge used at SkinRevision was lent to us by my dentist who had been using PRP in promote healing post extractions!
More recently, the medical profession had a lightbulb moment about PRP, realizing its effectiveness in facial rejuvenation, dermatology, skin wound healing, feminine rejuvenation and even hair re-growth, was not to be over-looked.
What is PRP?
PRP is a result of concentrating a sample of your blood. The process of extracting and injecting or topically applying PRP is a simple process but requires specific training. A small amount of blood is drawn into a special sterile tube designed to separate blood into its component parts when spun in a centrifuge. The white and red cells are separated from the platelets and plasma which is a clear yellow-ish fluid, known as Liquid Gold and is called Platelet-Rich Plasma.
When the concentrated platelets are injected or applied topically during Medical MicroNeedling, they become activated in soft tissue, meaning numerous growth factors and cytokines are released, including:

- Epidermal growth factor

But what does this really mean for Skin
Rejuvenation???
Once these growth factors and helper proteins bind with our skin’s cellular receptors, they cause new cell proliferation, such as the all-important Fibroblasts, whose job it is to produce collagen and elastin in our skin. Collagen and elastin are a critical part of the support infrastructure of our skin which helps to decrease laxity, fine lines and wrinkles…to maintain overall firmness and tone of our skin.
When PRP is injected, the treatment time is less than 30 minutes and injections are relatively painless when delivered via MicroDroplet PRP Injections, which are small boluses of PRP placed into the treatment area. Other than mild swelling, redness and bruising which typically dissipates in a few days, there is minimal risk since PRP is made from your own blood. Deep PRP Injections are administered with similar needles as filler, placed in areas where filler would be used such as around the mouth, cheeks, lips and under eyes and can potentially result in a bit more bruising due to the gauge and deeper depth of the needle.
Results can be seen 3-4 weeks after treatment and continue to improve over time. For best results, several treatments are generally recommended, spaced about 30 days apart. Multiple PRP Treatments result in a compounding effect. Smoother skin texture, improved tone, fewer fine lines and wrinkles with an overall firmer and dewey appearance are typical results of PRP injections.
One of the many exciting benefits of PRP is that it works very well other cosmetic injectables such as Botox and the Juvéderm® Family of Fillers. Combining PRP with filler is known as PRP Enhanced Filler, or, the "Vampire" or PRP Facelift. PRP can also be used in combination with Clinical Skincare Treatments such as Resurfacing (peels), MicroPeels and of course, Medical MicroNeedling.

What is Medical MicroNeedling?
Medical MicroNeedling is a minimally invasive aesthetics treatment utilizing a handheld medical device with micro-fine needles which create micro-injuries in your skin. Controlled wounding of your skin, triggers your wound healing response and stimulates collagen and elastin production. Hyaluronic Acid and Vitamin C are applied topically and penetrate more deeply into your skin, providing a more effective treatment by adding hydration and boosting collagen production even further. Medical MicroNeedling is also known as Collagen Induction Therapy, Skin Needling and Percutaneous Collagen Induction.
Benefits of Medical MicroNeedling
This Anti-aging treatment is considered the Gold Standard for over-all skin rejuvenation, used to treat fine lines and wrinkles, acne scarring, loose skin, skin texture, pore size, hyperpigmentation (dark spots) and stretch marks. Medical MicroNeedling has few contraindications and is safe for all skin types including more pigmented, ethnic skin types.
What are the Benefits of PRP Enhanced Medical MicroNeedling?
While Medical MicroNeedling is an effective treatment on its own, the results can be enhanced when PRP is applied topically during MicroNeedling. This treatment is sometimes referred to as a Blood Facial or “Vampire Facial”.
During this treatment, the channels created by the microneedles enhance the absorption of Anti-aging products and collagen stimulating products, such as Vitamin C, applied to the skin. Absorption of nutrients increases by 3000% during the treatment. Imagine the benefit of introducing PRP topically as a collagen boosting enhancement as well as turbo-boosting cell turnover to maximize the benefits of the healing process.
One of the most significant benefits of any PRP Enhanced Skin Therapy is that the results are meant to mimic a facelift with minimal downtime!
